Colombia: Amenazas de muerte contra activistas Colombianos
El 20 de junio, el equipo de comunicaciones de la Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz y la ex dirigente del Concejo Regional Indígena del Cauca, Ayda Quilcué, recibieron una amenaza de muerte mediante SMS en su teléfono móvil. El mensaje mencionaba a otras organizaciones de derechos humanos y sindicatos, a los que acusaba de pertenecer a grupos guerrilleros y a los que amenazaban de muerte.

Bertín Vázquez Ruiz y Guadalupe Andrés Vázquez Ruiz miembros de la Coordinadora de Pueblos Unidos del Valle de Ocotlán (CPUVO), una organización comunitaria que se opone a las operaciones mineras en el estado de Oaxaca, en el sur de México, resultaron heridos por disparos el 16 de junio. Ellos y otros miembros de la organización corren peligro de sufrir nuevos ataques.

Un paso más hacia un mecanismo de protección en México
El 22 de junio, el Gobierno de México promulgó finalmente el decreto estableciendo la Ley para la Protección de Personas Defensoras de Derechos Humanos y Periodistas, que crea un marco legal claro para la cooperación entre autoridades federales y estatales en la implementación de medidas eficaces para la protección de defensoras y defensores de derechos humanos y periodistas en riesgo.
Partiendo de este marco legal, será fundamental para la eficacia y legitimidad del mecanismo que se garantice la participación plena de representantes de la sociedad civil y que se dote al mecanismo de los recursos necesarios para su efectividad.

We would like to share with you the last urgent actions published by Amnesty International on behalf of human rights defenders at risk in the Americas:
Colombia: Activists receive death threats
On 20 June 2012, an SMS text message was received by the communications team of the Inter-Church Commission of Justice and Peace and by former leader of the Cauca Department Indigenous Regional Council, Ayda Quilcué. The messages mentioned other human rights organizations and trade unions, accusing them of being members of guerrilla groups and threatening them with death.

In addition to the organisations mentioned in the urgent action, please note the Cauca Branch of the Political Prisoners Solidarity Committee (CSPP) was also included in the death threat. Don't forget to mention them in any letters.
Mexico: Community organisation in danger, two shot
Bertín Vázquez Ruíz and Guadalupe Andrés Vázquez Ruiz members of the Coordination of United Peoples of the Valley of Ocotlán (CPUVO), a community organisation that opposes mining operations in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, were shot and wounded on 16 June. An additional step towards a protection mechanism in Mexico
On 22 June, the Mexican Government of Mexico issued a decree establishing the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists. This Law creates a clear legal framework for cooperation between federal and state authorities to implement effective measures to protect human rights defenders and journalists at risk.
On the basis of this legal framework, it will be crucial for the effectiveness and legitimacy of the mechanism that full participation of civil society representatives is ensured. Also, appropriate resources will have to be put in place to guarantee its effectiveness.
